Honoring the Veterans of Eagle Ridge

Veterans Day is a celebration to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

A Short History of Veterans Day

An Act approved on May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday—a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as "Armistice Day." Armistice Day was primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I, but in 1954, after World War II had required the greatest mobilization of soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen in the Nation’s history; after American forces had fought aggression in Korea, the 83rd Congress, at the urging of the veterans service organizations, amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting in its place the word "Veterans." With the approval of this legislation  on June 1, 1954, November 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars (history of Veterans Day provided by www.va.gov).

Eagle Ridge wishes to thank all of those who have served, especially those veterans who make our community their home. We appreciate your sacrifice and courage.

Here are just a few of the Eagle Ridge veteran residents being honored today:
Pete just moved to Eagle Ridge in September. He served in the Air Force from 1962-1968 during the Vietnam era and was also in the reserves from 1968-1974.
Richard enlisted in the U.S Navy during pearl harbor in 1941.  During his years of service he was trained as a 3rd class petty officer, was one of the first physical therapists at the Green lakes hospital on the Naval base. When Roosevelt died Richard was in Washington and was invited to march in the parade at his funeral.  He has lived at Eagle Ridge since 1992.
Richard shared with us some of the honors he earned during his service.

Ron (right) served from 1943 – 1946 in the United States Navy and Merchant Marines.
This is Ron today (left) with his son Jim, who served in United States Air Force in 1963-1967. Both are residents of Eagle Ridge.

In a special way we would like to recognize and honor Shawn, our maintenance supervisor, for his military service. Shawn was stationed at Hohenfels, Germany from 1990-1994 during the Gulf War.

Thank you to all who serve! Happy Veteran's Day!
